Passengerdays
– cruise ship tourism in Iceland
The rapid growth of cruise ship tourism has reshaped Iceland’s landscape, economy, and everyday life. Passengerdays is a mixed-media installation that examines this transformation and the complex relationship between rising visitor numbers and local experience. At its core is a multi-layered map that visualises national data on cruise ship arrivals, revealing how sharply passenger numbers have increased.
An augmented-reality layer offers further insight, allowing visitors to explore patterns in greater depth. Alongside this, stories gathered through online and street surveys present contrasting voices from local communities, ranging from optimism about economic opportunities to concerns about overcrowding and environmental impact.
The installation invites reflection and dialogue, encouraging visitors to consider these perspectives and to contribute their own experiences to the growing collection.
